USB - IF Compliance Workshop, September 2010

USB-IF Compliance Workshops are held regularly to promote USB product development. Please remember that all attendees must be USB Implementers Forum members in good standing and be pre-registered in order to attend. Please be sure to thoroughly test your products and complete the required checklists before coming to a Compliance Workshop. Vendor-Hosted Test Suite Form:

The purpose of this form is to get your Vendor-Hosted Test Suite placed on the correct testing floor and spaced appropriately to prevent testing interference.  Please fill out and fax your completed form to the USB-IF at +1(503) 644-6708 by Monday, August 30, 2010. 

  • Faxing in this form does NOT register your for the event. 
  • Unlike previous Compliance Workshops completing this form does NOT make your sleeping room reservation for your suite.  For information on how to make your vendor-hosted test suite reservation and general attendee sleeping room reservations please read below.      

 

Making Your Room Reservations:

Please visit the Westin Taipei website at http://www.starwoodmeeting.com/StarGroupsWeb/res?id=1007128339&key=C9A26 to make your hotel room reservation.  Use the FIRST and LAST name you listed on your Vendor-Hosted Test Suite form if you are required to host a suite so we can find your reservation and place you in the correct room.   

 

We recommend you make your reservation by Monday, August 30, 2010.  This will help ensure your ability to get a room, as the hotel has been known to sell out.  Once the group block is filled, rooms will be available at the prevailing rate.  If you register and are unable to secure a room Monday-Friday with late checkout at 6:00pm (or through Saturday if you are unable to get late checkout Friday) the standard event cancellation policy will apply.  Please note: you are responsible for organizing and requesting a late checkout directly with the hotel.

Registration & Workshop Overview

USB 2.0 Certification Testing

Certification testing will be available for the following products:

    • PCs; Notebooks; Motherboards; Hubs with HIGH-SPEED capable ports (using CERTIFIED silicon)
    • HIGH and FULL-SPEED compound devices*
    • HIGH, FULL and LOW-SPEED peripheral
    • HIGH and FULL-SPEED Embedded Host

*NOTE:  Compound devices with exposed downstream ports are considered a hub and must register as a hub. Like hub vendors, compound device vendors are required to reserve a hotel room to serve as their test suite for interoperability testing with visiting peripheral vendors for the duration of the workshop. Compound devices that do not meet this requirement will not be eligible for the Integrators List.


A limited number of testing slots are available and vendors are restricted in the number of products that can be registered. Each registered product must have its own company representative accompany it at all times. An exception is made for low-speed peripherals where one representative can accompany 2 peripherals. Please note that registrations are accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Peripheral Vendors and Embedded Host

Peripheral and Embedded Host vendors need only attend one day of the workshop.  During that day, peripheral vendors will visit USB-IF Compliance Test Suites and vendor-hosted Demonstrated Operability test suites.  Peripheral and Embedded Host Vendors are required to visit Vendor-hosted Demonstrated Operability test suite slots that are located on your printed schedule. Vendors must sign in to each Vendor-hosted demo suite.

  • Peripheral and Embedded Host vendors are not required to host a test suite at the Westin Taipei for testing.
  • Pretest Requirement: To move your registration from submitted to completed you must submit the required pretest Device Summary reports to admin@usb.org. Please view the pretest requirement section for more details below.
  • NOTE: The online registration form requires you to select the specific day on which you would like to test. You MUST check-in at the USB Hospitality Suite between 9:00 and 9:45 AM on the starting day of your testing session to confirm your testing slot. If you do not check-in (i.e. no-show), you forfeit your testing slot and are subject to the cancellation policy outlined below.  It will NOT be possible to re-schedule testing.

PCs, Notebooks, Motherboards and Hubs

Vendors of PCs, notebooks, motherboards and hubs including compound devices with exposed downstream ports are handled differently and are required to host their own test suite at the compliance workshop. Hub and compound device vendors will need two (2) samples of the registered product and two (2) company representatives to attend for testing purposes.  Hub and compound device vendors will keep one sample of the product in their test suite for interoperability testing with visiting peripheral vendors and the other sample will be tested as a peripheral – visiting the USB-IF and other stationary test suites.

 

Vendors of PCs, notebooks, and motherboards will remain in their test suite except when required to visit a USB-IF Compliance Test Suite

  • A special, mandatory check-in session will be held Monday, September 20th at 3:00- 4:00PM for all system, motherboard and hub vendors. System/motherboard/hub vendors must be set-up and prepared to begin testing at 8:00AM on Tuesday, September 21st and staff their stationary suite for interoperability testing through 7:00PM on Friday, September 24th.

Non Cert Vendor Hosted Stationary Suite

For test equipment vendors we have created a new registration category. Please register your informational only testing under the category: Non Cert Vendor Hosted Stationary Suite.

Non Cert Vendor Hosted Stationary Suite vendors must check-in on Monday, September 20th from 2:00PM - 4:00PM in order to be placed on the printed schedule.

 

SuperSpeed USB Certification Testing 

 

SuperSpeed USB Certification Testing: There will be certification testing available for devices that support SuperSpeed USB signaling. Members interested in this certification testing must register to attend this event by completing the online registration form.

 

Please select one of the two product categories:

  • 1 SuperSpeed Peripheral
  • 1 SS System, Motherboard, Hub (For Certification: PCs, Notebooks, Motherboards, Hubs with SuperSpeed capable ports must be using CERTIFIED SuperSpeed silicon)

Please indicate if you are testing your SuperSpeed USB product for certification or for informational purposes by completing the appropriate question on the registration form.

  

SuperSpeed USB Testing Schedule

SuperSpeed System, Motherboard, Hub:
  • SuperSpeed USB System, Motherboard, Hub vendors must check-in on Monday, September 20th between 2:00PM and 4:00PM. SuperSpeed USB System, Motherboard, Hub vendors must be set-up and prepared to begin testing at 8:00AM on Tuesday, September 21st and staff their stationary suite for interoperability testing through 6:00PM Friday, September 24th.
SuperSpeed Peripherals:
  • SuperSpeed USB Peripheral testing has been shortened to two days.
  • We have separated SuperSpeed peripheral testing into two different testing periods. Please make sure to select one of the two testing periods when you register for the event.
    1. Tuesday, September 21st - Wednesday, September 22nd 
    2. Thursday, September 23rd - Friday, September 24th 
  • SuperSpeed USB Peripheral vendors must check-in to the Hospitality Suite between 3:00PM and 4:00PM one day prior to your testing slot.
    • Slot 1 (Tuesday, September 21st - Wednesday, September 22nd) must check-in on Monday, September 20th between 3:00PM - 4:00PM. Testing will take place Tuesday, September 21st - Wednesday, September 22nd from 8:00AM - 7:00PM.
    • Slot 2 (Thursday, September 23rd - Friday, September 24th) must check-in on Wednesday, September 22nd between 3:00PM and 4:00PM. Testing will take place Thursday, September 23rd from 8:00AM - 7:00PM and Friday, September 24th from 8:00AM - 6:00PM.
  • SuperSpeed USB Peripherals do not need to host a stationary suite.

Pretest Requirement:

PRETEST REQUIRED: A pretest is required for USB peripheral functions and hubs. Please remember to submit the required Device Summary report so we can move your registration from submitted to completed. Only completed registrations may attend the workshop.

For USB 2.0 peripherals and hubs the device summary report is generated by the USB20CV tool. SuperSpeed peripherals and hubs must provide the device summary from both the USB20CV and USB30CV tools.

Products that have multiple personalities (USB functions that are enabled only by menu options or switches), will need to provide a Device Summary report for each personality.

Compound devices (hubs with embedded peripherals) will need to provide a Device Summary report for each hub and embedded peripheral to move their registration from submitted to completed

Registration

  • Fill out the online form (USB-IF Members only) - Compliance Workshop registration deadline is Sunday, September 12, 2010.
  • NOTE: The online registration form requires you to select the specific day on which you wish to test.  Check-in is required. You must check-in at the USB Hospitality Suite on the starting day of your testing session to confirm your testing slot.   • The registration form will reject attempts to register after all the testing slots are filled. After the testing slots have been filled we will start a waiting list. Products on the waiting list are NOT guaranteed a testing slot.

 

Information

  • You must pre-register each individual from your company attending the workshop using the online form (USB-IF Members only) by Sunday, September 12, 2010.  
  • Check-in is required.  You must check-in at the USB Hospitality Suite between on the start day of your testing session to confirm your testing slot. If you do not check-in, you forfeit your testing slot.  It will NOT be possible to re-schedule testing.  Check-in times are listed above in the Registration & Workshop Overview section and listed by product type. 
  • Devices using a detachable cable must use a receptacle and cable currently on the Integrators List.
  • It is strongly suggested that the HS electrical package from the USB-IF website be pre-installed on systems.
  • Windows 7 (English version) must be pre-installed on systems. If the system is legacy free (USB ports only – no P/S2 mouse or keyboard) it must provide a working LAN adaptor so electrical testing can be conducted using the Windows XP remote desktop feature.
  • The Vendor ID (VID) used by commercial products should match the Vendor ID of the Integrator. Products should not use the Vendor ID of the USB silicon vendor. Vendor IDs will be checked and verified at this and future workshops. The device will not be eligible for the Integrators List unless it reports the correct VID for your company.
  • Each individual vendor is responsible for their own shipping to and from the event.

Cancellation Policy

If you become unable to attend this workshop, please notify us as soon as possible by email to cancellations@usb.org so your testing reservation can be released to other members with products to test.

Companies that no-show or do not cancel their testing reservation(s)  for the upcoming workshop in writing to cancellations@usb.org by midnight (PT) Sunday September 12, 2010 will not be eligible to test at the next scheduled Compliance Workshop, and subject to a $500 cancellation fee. The cancellation fee must be paid before the company will be eligible to register for future workshops. This policy will be strictly enforced.

Schedule Notes

  • Battery-powered devices must test with a dead battery in addition to normal testing. Bringing your product with a discharged battery (i.e. device is unable to power on) is required.
  • Bring quality equipment.  Poor-quality monitors, mice, keyboards, etc. sometimes used at prior workshops have made it difficult to get the test sessions finished on time.
  • If you miss your assigned test time, you forfeit your test slot.  It will NOT be possible to reschedule testing at this workshop.
  • Peripheral and embedded host vendors must check-in at the USB Hospitality Suite between 9:00 and 9:45 AM on the starting day of your testing session to confirm your testing slot.  If you do not check-in, you forfeit your testing slot
  • Debug services will not be available.  Please be sure to pre-test and debug your devices before attending.  There will be no rescheduling of test times.

Reminder for Devices

USB-IF Compliance Program

Devices with captive cables must use a connector currently on the Integrators List. Devices using a detachable cable must use a cable assembly currently on the Integrators List.

The Interoperability Gold Tree and test procedures will follow the procedure defined at http://compliance.usb.org/index.asp?UpdateFile=Interoperability#11. Interoperability testing under Windows 7 will be available at this workshop

Attention Vendors Seeking Certification for their Devices:

Compliance workshops run on a schedule and there is a limited amount of time available to test your product.  It is your responsibility to ensure that all required tests are performed on your product.  Please refer to the mandatory test matrix

The product must be able to be tested in the time allotted.  Peripherals and hosts are given 90 minutes each. The USB-IF cannot guarantee that all tests can be performed on your device in the time allocated.  There is little time, if any, for debugging so be sure to thoroughly test the device beforehand.  Any test marked “incomplete” will prevent certification.  Please be sure to ask the volunteers executing the tests for a copy of the test results and review them carefully before leaving the workshop.  The USB-IF is not responsible for missing results. 

The test schedule is based on information obtained from the online device registration.  If your product is unusual (has more than one USB connector, includes an embedded host, requires special equipment to operate, etc…) please contact the USB‑IF Administration prior to the workshop to make arrangements for special handling.  The USB-IF reserves the right to require additional tests upon inspection of the device at the workshop.

Retesting is permitted by permission only pending available time.  If corrections are made to a device during the workshop, obtain a Retest Slip from the hospitality suite.  A detailed explanation of the failure and the corrections performed is needed in order to determine what compliance tests are to be performed.  There is no assurance that time will be available to retest a device.

All tests are to be performed on one device.  Exchanging a device with another during compliance testing is strictly prohibited. If a device must be replaced due to a breakdown, all tests on the broken device become void and a complete retest is required.


Compliance Testing:

Peripheral Test Sessions
This workshop will include an Implementers Forum-established and -staffed test suite for USB peripherals. Test software used will primarily cover Chapter 9 of the USB spec, electrical characteristics and interoperability with other USB devices. Peripherals that provide external interfaces (flash card readers, Ethernet adapters, etc.) must provide hardware to fully populate the external interfaces. Peripheral vendors will be scheduled into the suite one at a time. Briefly, the test procedure includes: attaching the peripheral; loading the driver; and running tests against the peripheral; the results will be recorded and used as one of the elements in determining USB compliance. The USB-IF intends to test battery-powered devices with a dead battery in addition to normal testing. Bringing your product with a discharged battery (i.e. device is unable to power on) is required. This is to investigate dead battery current consumption with the potential to become a compliance requirement in the future.

Embedded Host Test Sessions

System Test Sessions
This workshop will include an Implementers Forum-established and -staffed test suite for high speed capable USB systems. Tests will primarily cover Chapter 7 of the USB spec, electrical characteristics and interoperability with other USB devices. Vendors need to ensure they install the English version of Windows 7. The OS should have all current service packs and updates applied. Non-legacy systems/motherboards must have a functioning LAN port to support remote desktop. System vendors will be scheduled into the suite one at a time. The results will be recorded and used as one of the elements in determining USB compliance. Specifications
A product's admittance to the Integrators List is based, in part, on a handful of compliance tests performed in the USB-IF suites. As time goes on and the technology matures we will add tests for problems discovered in these suites. Some tests are provided to raise awareness of potential problems in products and others are required to pass the workshop for the purposes of getting a product listed on the Integrators List. For specific information regarding the requirements for Integrators List qualification, see the Compliance Program Area of this site.

Results
Products that pass the appropriate Implementers Forum tests, and submit a complete and satisfactory checklist, will be listed on an Implementers Forum confidential "Integrators List" which a number of Implementers Forum companies use to make product purchase decisions.

What to Bring

System/Motherboard/Hub Vendors:

USB system minimum requirements:

Peripheral Vendors:

  • 1 each of the peripherals to be tested, any needed S/W drivers BOTH on a CD and USB flash media drive.
  • A discharged battery (battery-powered devices only).  The definition of a discharged battery is one where the device is unable to power on.
  • Devices that implement external interfaces, such as flash card readers, must be tested with their interfaces fully populated.
  • A completed checklist.
  • A USB flash media drive to store electronic copies of test results.

Embedded Host Product Vendors:

 

·         All equipment necessary to operate the Embedded Host product.

·         A copy of the complete targeted peripheral list.

·         peripherals from the targeted peripheral list that enable the product to operate at EACH of the supported speeds along with instructions for operating those peripherals (Please note: Do not bring peripherals from the targeted peripheral list that use captive cables unless no other option is available.)

·         A completed checklist.

·         A USB flash media drive to store electronic copies of test results

Cost

Compliance Workshop participants are responsible for their own travel, food and hotel expenses.  The USB Implementers Forum will cover all administrative costs.  Lunch is not provided.
